BETHANY, OKLA. – The East Central University women's tennis team earned a Great American Conference win over Southern Nazarene, 5-4, in a regional match.
The Tigers (9-9, 3-0 GAC) were ranked No. 8 in the ITA Central Region going into the match, while the Crimson Storm (2-8, 2-3 GAC) were No. 7 in the latest rankings.
ECU took a 2-1 lead after the doubles matches, with No. 2 and No. 3 doubles earning the points. Freshman
Srijita Ghosh and senior
Bernardita Muscillo first combined for an 8-0 win over Kaitlyn Atkeson and Taylor Sullivan at No. 3 doubles. The points was followed by an 8-3 win by sophomore
Gloria Mayorga and senior Virginia Rodriquez at No. 2 doubles over Polina Chala and Karina Kotova.
The Tigers then got quick 6-0, 6-0 wins in singles play from both Ghosh and redshirt freshman
Veronica Mijares at No. 5 and No. 6 singles to put ECU up 4-1.
Mayorga then picked up the win for the Tigers with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Karina Kotova at No. 4 singles.
SNU took the final three singles points, but they were all hard fought, with sophomore
Julia Municoy going into extra points and the full three sets.
ECU will now get ready for two non-conference matches at home this weekend at Mayhue Courts. The first will be Friday, April 10 at 1 p.m. against Oklahoma Baptist and then a Sunday, April 12 10 a.m. regional match against Nebraska-Kearney.
